Die Wehrkirchen drängen sich in Kärnten vorwiegend in den östlichen und zentralen Landschaften. Dies hängt mit deren besonderer Bedrohung durch die Türkeneinfalle im 15. Jahrhundert zusammen. In Kärnten nahmen die Raubzüge bestimmte, durch Flusstäler und Gebirgsübergänge vorgezeichnete Wege in die offenen, flachen Binnenlandschaften. Über den Seebergpass fielen 1473 die Türken zum ersten mal in Kärnten ein, 1478 drangen sie über den Predil ins Land ein. In ihrem Vorgelände sind überall Wehrkirchen anzutreffen, während sie im Oberland, das wenig und nur kurze Zeit unter den Einfallen zu leiden hatte, seltener sind.
Für die örtliche Lage der Kärntner Kirchen waren kaum jemals Verteidigungsrücksichten maßgebend. Die Kirchen wurden dort errichtet, wo sie von den umliegenden, zu ihr gehörigen Ortschaften leicht erreichbar waren und womöglich durch erhöhte Lage in ihrem Einflussbereich in Sicht blieben.
Dass die Kirchen in den meisten Fällen auf für die Verteidigung wenig geeigneten Plätzen liegen, was besonders bei ihrer häufigen Hanglage zutrifft, ist ein Zeichen, dass diese Kirchen schon längst bestanden haben, bevor es zu ihrer Befestigung kam.
